Het New Reform Archief, op deskundige wijze gestructureerd en bewaard in het Stadsarchief van Aalst, blijft de belangstelling wekken van curatoren en onderzoekers uit binnen- en buitenland. In de voorbije maanden brachten Ine Engels, Eliel Jones en Jacob Waits ons een bezoek in functie van specifieke opdrachten.
Ine Engels, Department of Art History, Musicology and Theater Studies Ghent University, aan het doctoraatsonderzoek over de aanwezigheid van Latijns-Amerikaanse kunstenaars in België in de jaren 60-70. Het NR archief bevat heel wat informatie over deze kunstenaars en een uitgebreide documentatie en briefwisseling met Jorge Glusberg oprichter van het Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAyC) in Argentinie. “Ik ben vorige week door de CAyC prints gegaan in het Stadsarchief van Aalst. Echt, wow! Wat een vondst!” zo heeft Ine ons laten weten. Haar werkzaamheden in het archief namen verschillende dagen in beslag. Ook haar eigen studenten maakten kennis met het archief.
Eliel Jones is curator ‘Performance and Time-based Media’ bij Kanal in Brussel. Hij doet momenteel onderzoek naar de beginjaren van performance art in België. New Reform legde met bescheiden middelen de basis voor de performance- en installatiekunst in België. Naast samenwerkingen met een rits buitenlandse kunstenaars daagde NR Belgische kunstenaars uit om performance en installatiekunst te gebruiken als medium. Het toppunt werd bereikt in 1978 met de organisatie van het Performance Art Festival in de Beursschouwburg te Brussel.
Samen met Johan Wambacq, oud-directeur van de Beursschouwburg, ben ik de voorbije weken op zoek gegaan naar de video opnames van de 18 live performances. Die zijn gevonden in de archieven van Argos te Brussel. Er is nog wat werk aan om ze allemaal te benoemen naar auteur en inhoud. Restauratie en digitalisering zullen noodzakelijk zijn om ze voor de toekomst te bewaren en gebruiken.
Tenslotte kregen wij ook het bezoek van Jacob Waits, doctoraal onderzoeker aan het Department of Art History van Northwestern University in Chicago. Hij werkte 3 dagen in het archief. Zijn onderzoek richt zich in het bijzonder op de samenwerkingen van New Reform met Oost-Europese kunstenaars en op de relaties van New Reform met andere conceptuele galeries (Art & Project, Wide White Space, MTL, enz.), waarbij het in kaart brengen van deze netwerken een kernonderdeel van zijn proefschrift vormt. Bovendien werkt hij aan een bijdrage over Petr Štembera voor een komende conferentie. New Reform bezorgde Petr Štembera zijn allereerste persoonlijke tentoonstelling in het toenmalige ’West-Europa’. Voordien bezocht Jacob Waits het RKD-archief in Den Haag, na Aalst vertrok hij nog naar ZADIK in Keulen en mogelijk ook naar het Klaus Groh-archief in Bremen. Jacob Waits was overigens zeer enthousiast over het archief en liet weten dat zijn driedaags bezoek zijn onderzoek sterk heeft vooruit geholpen.

NEW REFORM ARCHIVE: SOURCE OF INFORMATION
The New Reform Archive, expertly structured and preserved in the City Archives of Aalst, continues to attract the interest of curators and researchers from Belgium and abroad. In recent months, Ine Engels, Eliel Jones, and Jacob Waits visited us in connection with specific assignments.
Ine Engels, Department of Art History, Musicology and Theater Studies Ghent University, is working on her doctoral research on the presence of Latin American artists in Belgium in the 1960s - 1970s. The NR archive contains a wealth of information about these artists and extensive documentation and correspondence with Jorge Glusberg, founder of the Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAyC) in Argentina. He is also working on a contribution about Petr Štembera for an upcoming conference. New Reform gave Petr Štembera his very first solo exhibition in what was then ‘Western Europe’.
Prior to this, Jacob Waits visited the RKD archive in The Hague, and after Aalst he traveled to ZADIK in Cologne and possibly also to the Klaus Groh archive in Bremen. Jacob Waits was very enthusiastic about the archive and said that his three-day visit had greatly advanced his research.
