ARCHIV IN MOTION

The CAYC Files is the first initiative organized as part of a long-term partnership between the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA), New York. Their first collaboration centers on the digitization and annotation of key documents belonging to the Buenos Aires-based Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAYC) and its founder, the legendary cultural promoter Jorge Glusberg.

The Museum of Fine Arts Huston maakte onlangs de files wereldkundig via een publicatie op haar website. Daarin wordt ook aandacht geschinken aan de relatie van het Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAYC) met New Reform Aalst. De files bevinden zich ook in de archieven van New Reform, te bekijken in het stadsarchief van Aalst.

Arte de sistemas en latinoamerica
Playing a key role in the coverage of Arte de Sistemas en Latinoamérica on its tour of European cities (from April to December 1974), this newsletter includes a review of the exhibition at the Internationaal Cultureel Centrum in Antwerp written by **Roger D´Hondt and published in New Reform News. The article includes photographs of various works by Luis Fernando Benedit, Nicolás García Uriburu, Antonio Berni, and Víctor Grippo at the first edition.

Ever since it was founded, the CAYC (Centro de Arte y Comunicación), helmed by the cultural promoter, artist, and businessman Jorge Glusberg, was intended as an interdisciplinary space where an experimental art movement could flourish. The establishment of collaborative networks connecting local and international artists and critics played an important role in this process. The exhibitions shone a light on these exchanges, in which overviews of trends or individual artists provided an introduction to the innovations of international contemporary art and made Argentine and Latin American artists better known on the global scene.
In 1974 the CAYC began focusing a great deal of its attention on this project, promoting a variety of initiatives in a contemporary circuit of new cultural spaces and centers that were emerging in Europe at the time. A number of exhibitions of Latin American and Argentinean art visited several European cities, presenting an overview of the region’s recent works.
It should be noted that Arte de Sistemas en Latinoamérica established arte de sistemas as a movement that positioned the CAYC as the focal point for the exposure and promotion of Latin American Conceptualism. The newsletter includes a review written by Roger D´Hondt that appeared in New Reform News, the monthly newsletter published by New Reform, the art center in Aalst, Belgium, where D´Hondt was the director from 1970 to 1979.

NEW REFORM IN CELBETON

In de bibliotheek van Dendermonde worden momenteel (12/6 tot 30/7/2023) archieven getoond uit het 'Tijdperk' Celbeton (1957/75), een vrijplaats voor kunst, literatuur, muziek, theater en andere spontane creaties in het snijvlak van kultuur en maatschappij. De plaats van het gebeuren was een volkscafe in Dendermonde. Bezieler Adolf Merckx maakte er een cultureel centrum 'avant la lettre' van, wat de dichter Karel Jonkheere deed besluiten dat de togen in de Vlaamse volkscafe's de echte Vlaamse culturele centra waren. Curator Koen Brams reconstrueerde en inventariseerde de periode Celbeton aan de hand van archieven tot een indrukwekkend geheel. In 1972 nam New Reform, samen met vier andere Belgische avant-garde galeries, deel aan de tentoonstelling 'Jungle Art Jungle' (zie tekst onderaan). Koen Brams deed beroep op onze archieven om dit deel van het project te duiden.

AVANTGARDE IN TSJECHIË

Hana Buddeus werkt als onderzoeker aan de Academy of Arts,Architecture and Design in Prague. Voor haar doctoraat thesis en boek (2017): 'Representation without Reproduction? Photography and Performance in Czech Art of the 1970s' putte ze informatie uit de archieven van de Galerie Remont en New Reform. Cover boek Petr Štembera uit archief New Reform.

IN-OUT CENTER/NEW REFORM

De kunsthistorici Tineke Reijnders en Corinne Groot hebben onderzoek gedaan naar de werking van het In-Out Center te Amsterdam, een kunstenaarscollectief (1972-1974) waar nog weinig van bekend was. Het is hen gelukt om vrijwel alle betrokken kunstenaars en samenwerkinsgverbanden te traceren en te bezoeken om hun archieven te bekijken. Ook het archief van New Reform werd onder loupe genomen. Alles werd bijeen gebracht op een tentoonstelling in De Appel eind 2016. Ook de gezeefdrukte affiche van de New Reform Gallery was er te zien. Een mooie illustratie van het samenwerkingsverband dat er bestond tussen beide alternatieve kunstcentra.
